What is Water Damage?

Water damage is the deterioration of any material due to the presence of water. It can happen to any material that is porous, such as most building materials. However, it is most commonly seen in carpets. Water-damaged carpets will have a musty odor, a weak structure, and reduced padding. Water-damaged carpets will also be heavier than normal.

Water damage is often caused by floods, broken pipes, and weather events.

When it comes to carpets, excess moisture will damage the padding in the carpet. After flooding, the carpet will retain moisture for an extended period of time. This can lead to mold or other dangerous situations.

Signs of Moisture Damage

  • Musty Smell – The musty smell is a sign that there is excess moisture in the carpet padding.
  • Heavy Carpet – The heavy carpet is a sign that there is too much moisture in the carpet.
  • Water spots on the carpet. You can often feel these or they are visible. You can also use a moisture meter when you are not sure.

Carpets are made out of different materials:

Wool, jute, or cotton- These are natural materials. If there isn’t too much water, it might be quite easy to remove. If there is more water on them, it can be hard to get it out.

Synthetics such as Nylon or Polypropylene – These are man-made materials. Depending on the type of nylon, the water might be simple to remove.

The pattern and color also have an impact on how easy it is to clean a carpet after it has been wet. Darker colors are often easier to clean. Complex patterns and drawings will make it harder as the colors can mix.

If there is not a lot of water, you can just let the water get out and dehumidify the room. This is only for very small water spots. There are professional dehumidifiers that have sensors to check how humid the room is. They can adjust the humidity to make it drop. You can also use a hairdryer on the carpet but be careful that you don’t overheat the carpet. Also, be careful that you don’t get electrocuted as some air dryers use electricity and this doesn’t work well with water.

Don’t forget to clean the surface under the carpet as this can contain water as well. This should be mopped up and dried. Wait until the floor is completely dry before you place a carpet on the floor again. If the carpet is fixed, you might want to open a few corners to check if the area under the carpet is dry or not. Some carpets have plastic under them and this holds the water from seeping onto the floor under it.

You can also try to let the carpet dry in the sun. This might take longer though and damage some of the colors of the carpet if it stays too long in the sun. For this reason, it is not optimal for carpets with drawings. This also only works for carpets that aren’t attached to a subfloor.
