Should you clean toilet before the plumber comes? (Do THIS instead!)

When your toilet isn’t working correctly, it may be time to call a plumber. However, before you get a plumber to fix your broken toilet, it’s worth getting some cleaning done yourself to make sure that the problem isn’t something that can be fixed with only a little scrubbing and elbow grease.

If this didn’t work, you might consider cleaning the toilet for your plumber. Plumbers understand that a toilet can be filled if there is a blockage. It is part of the job. In some instances, they have to work in dirty situations. They might charge more for this though so it can be a great idea to clean the toilet before the plumber comes but it is not really needed. Plumbers wear gloves and other protective equipment so that they can deal with dirty situations.

Check for blockages

Toilet plumbing is one of those things you probably don’t think about unless something goes wrong. But when the toilet in your home starts acting up, fixing it as soon as possible is essential so that any potential damage stays minimal. A blocked or clogged toilet can cause a number of problems; for example, if left ignored for a long time, it can even result in flooding or water leakage.

To check for blockages, you should remove the toilet lid and look inside the bowl. If you see something that shouldn’t be there (like a crumpled-up piece of paper or another small object), you’ll need to take it out.

If you have a clog and you’ve tried fishing the cause out of the toilet bowl, you may want to try a toilet plunger. A plunger can already remove a lot of problems. To do this, simply place the plunger over the toilet bowl. Then you add water to the toilet bowl. Finally,  pump it a few times to push air into the drains.  Check if this removes the clog by flushing the toilet a few times. More detailed steps can be found here.

You can also use an auger to reach clogs that are further down the drain. It can be quite challenging to use this tool though and you can call a plumber if you don’t want to deal with this. We have discussed this in more detail here.

Cleaning can make the toilet flush better

Dirt around the rim or in the toilet tank can also slow down the water flow. You can use a descaler such as vinegar to clean this off. Opening the toilet tank and cleaning the dirt from this part can work as well.

Toilets have quite a lot of parts. You might have to take some time to check each area and use a sponge to clean it. Most people forget to clean under the toilet rim or inside the toilet tank. This can make a big difference though as these are parts of the toilets that can collect a lot of dirt. If this didn’t help, we will have to call a plumber to fix the water flow in the toilet.

You can also use a toilet brush to clean hard-to-reach parts of the toilet. Make sure to wear gloves while you dot his. If you use wet wipes, don’t throw them in the toilet. These can clog up and block your toilet. In fact, it is a common reason why toilets break down.

Why you should clean the toilet for your plumber

Plumbers know that you need to use the toilet. It can take some time before they arrive at your home to fix a clog. The toilet can be filled up by then. There can be even flies in the area. A lot of people don’t like this situation but plumbers have seen it all before; They are used to it and have the right gear and attitude to deal with it. They wear boots, gloves, and an overall.

Given that most clogs are quite easy to fix, the plumber can wear protective gear and solve the problem quite fast. Most plumbers have a camera that they can push into the drain of the toilet to see what is going on. They also have a high-pressure water jet to remove bigger clogs.

There are some valid reasons to clean the toilet though. You might want to clean the toilet for your plumber because you think it is the right thing to do. You would like to do something to help your plumber.  A dirty toilet can create an unpleasant environment for your plumber, and it’s possible that they might even charge you more to clean up the mess before they work on the toilet.

It can be a good idea to clean up around the toilet bowl. This makes sure that the plumber doesn’t spread the dirt all over your house when this person walks around. A plumber often needs to check the situation and pick the right tool. This can make them walk around quite a lot.

More expensive plumbers might clean up the toilet after they have fixed it. This is an additional service that they might offer. Most plumbers don’t do this however as they mainly focus on fixing the problem.

Conclusion

When it comes to toilet troubles, there are a few things you can try before calling a plumber. If you’re having trouble flushing, try removing the lid of the toilet tank and check if everything is working properly.

If the problem is a clogged toilet, try using a plunger or fishing out any objects that might be causing the blockage. With these tips, you can minimize the risk of damage caused by a plumbing problem. Hopefully, you won’t need to call a plumber too often, but it’s always best to be prepared in case a problem arises.

Cleaning the toilet before the plumber arrives can be a nice gesture as it makes it more pleasant to work.
