Low well water pressure: Easy Fix

Well water pressure is the force with which a water well pumps water up to a home. The higher the pressure, the faster the water will flow from the well.

Well water pressure can also be affected by other factors, like the type of pump, maintenance of the pump, dirt in the well, the topography of the land around the well, the distance from a water source, and even the composition of the local rocks. Some of the factors that can affect well water pressure are listed below.

If the pressure is low, there is generally an issue with the pump. You should check if it gives an alert. It is also possible that the water filter needs to get cleaned. Dirt can get in the water pipe as well. This needs to get checked and cleaned.

A lot of pumps have a water pressure switch. You have to turn this to increase the water pressure. Check the manual of your pump to see how this needs to be done. Each pump has a unique approach to this. Often this is easy to do and only takes a few minutes if you have a screwdriver and pliers.

There are a lot of types of pumps and depending on the type of well and the distances that hast to be pumped, you have to pick the right one.

There are also pumps that have some reserved water so that it doesn’t have to start every time that you need water. This can make it easier for the pump and you get water faster. There can be an issue with this tank and this can lead to low water pressure as well.

The pump might also suck up too much air. This can indicate an installation issue. At the end of this post, we discuss some option to fix a pump.

The topography around a well affects the water pressure. A well that is on a hill has a higher pressure than one that is located on a flat land area. The type of rock near a well can also affect the water pressure. A well on bedrock, or rocks that are hard, usually has a high water pressure. A well that is near soft rocks, like sandstone, usually has lower water pressure. The hardest rocks are usually located at the base of the hill, or at the top of the hill. Wells near soft rocks usually have lower water pressure.

Distance to Water Source

The distance from a well to a source of clean water affects the water pressure. A well that is located very close to the house usually has a lower pressure than one that is located farther away, because the pressure will change depending on the amount of dirt near the well.

Composition of Rocks

Rocks near a well can also affect the water pressure. The type of rocks near a well can affect the water pressure. A well that is on bedrock, or hard rocks, usually has a high pressure. A well that is on soft, or easily crumbled rocks, usually has a lower pressure.

If there is dirt or sand in the well water, this can lead to issues if the pump is not able to deal with this. You have to check your local soil composition to make sure that you get the right pump. Adding filters might be needed as well.

Well Type

There are several types of well that can be used for water system purposes. A residential well generally has a lower pressure than a commercial well, which has a higher pressure. A well that is dug into the ground for irrigation purposes usually has a higher pressure than a well that is a surface well.

Some wells are a lot deeper than others. Deep wells might need a powerful pump to move the water.

Other reasons for low well pressure and fixes

Sometimes, the water pressure in a well will decrease over time.  You might have to drill deeper to get more water.

It is also possible that there is a leak in the water pipe. Examine the area around the water pipe with your hand and an infrared camera. A small leak can cause a lot of damage so make sure that you really examine the whole area where the pipes run in your house.

Wells can become damaged from excess equipment that is used near a well. This includes tubs, skid-mounted water pressure boosters, and other tools that the well owner will not be using near the well. Usually, wells that are used for irrigation purposes need to have more equipment than a residential well. The equipment can damage the well. The best way to correct this problem is by lowering the water pressure.

Another reason is when there has been a build-up of minerals in the well. The best way to fix this problem is by taking the pump out of the well and cleaning the inside of the well with a disinfectant.

There are many reasons why a well can malfunction, or have problems. These problems can be fixed by properly inspecting your well water system. If you notice any problems, you can call a well pump repair company for help.

What can be done to increase that water pressure?

There are a few things that you can do to increase the water pressure in your well. First, look at the materials that are being stored near the well. If possible, move these items away from the well. Another way to increase the water pressure in your well is by installing a booster pump. This can increase the water pressure from the well by several hundred pounds. A well with higher water pressure will clean your water faster than a well with a low water pressure.

To conclude, we can state that there are a couple of reasons why you might have low pressure from your well water. The most common reason is an issue with the pump but the local soil composition is also an important factor. You can also get a pump with a water reserve so that it doesn’t have to start every time that you need water.

A lot of people opt for an underpowered pump and this can lead to lower water pressures as well. Before you get a pump, you should study how much water you need and over what distance the water has to be transported. Well pumps also need to get cleaned and maintained regularly. This can increase the water pressure as well.

If you have shallow water well, you can consider a hand pump to make it easier to pump the water up.
