You’ve stocked up on snacks, drinks, and other perishables for your upcoming road trip. But have you closed your RV fridge properly? Not to worry, in this article, we will provide some helpful tips to make sure that the food in your fridge doesn’t fly all around.
There are 2 main things that you can do: lock the door of your fridge properly and make sure that the items are properly stored in your fridge. Let’s go over each of these.
Lock your RV Fridge door
The first step to keeping your fridge fresh is locking the door. Ensure the lock is engaged and the doorknob is in the “locked” position.
There are locks that you can buy online. These are often made out of 2 parts. One part is attached to the door and the other part to the fridge itself. The lock is closed by connecting these 2 parts. These locks are quite cheap and work really well. They can last several years as well.
This is the easiest solution if you want to make sure that the door of your fridge doesn’t open up all the time.
There are DIY solutions as well, such as using velcro, elastic, or a piece of rope. These solutions can work as well if you don’t have to close the fridge too often.
You can also check the rubber around the fridge to make sure that it has been installed properly. If this rubber part is broken, it can open the door of your fridge. Replacing this part is quite easy as you can remove the old part with a small knife. Installing the new part is also quite straightforward.
You can also give the rubber part a nudge to bring it back in shape.
Load your fridge correctly
Following all the rules above, you’ll want to make sure that you load your fridge correctly. This will ensure that your food stays fresh while you’re on the road.
If you’re not sure, here are a few things that you shouldn’t put in your fridge:
-Add the items to the appropriate bin. Fridges have several shelves and you should stack heavy items in the lowest part. Lighter things go in the door and on top of the fridge. This balances everything and makes sure that the door of your fridge isn’t overloaded.
Place items that can roll around (such as apples) in a bin or shelve. This makes sure that they won’t roll into the door and open them up.
If there are a lot of items in the door of your fridge, it is more likely to open up.
– Foods in glass containers: If you’re keeping your veggies in glass containers, it can result in damage if your fridge pops open.
– Foods that are too big for the fridge: Foods that are too big for the fridge will take up too much space and cause the fridge to open up.
Don’t overstock the fridge. When filling the fridge, keep in mind the amount of food that you actually need. Don’t try to stuff the fridge with too many items. The fridge can only handle so many things. Some items such as spices don’t have to be stored in the fridge.
A common problem is that people want to bring too many items. RV fridges are quite small so only pack the things that are really needed. You can use dried food instead of fresh food as this doesn’t have to be cooled.
Loading your fridge correctly takes more discipline than just adding a lock. These locks can’t handle everything so you should at least try to stack things properly. This takes some time but it can be worth it!
If needed, you can opt for a bigger fridge for your RV. The fridge should be properly installed and attached to the wall so that it doesn’t slide around. Check the manual of your RV for more information.
Don’t drive too wild
Finally, don’t drive your RV too wild. In an effort to make the most out of your trip, you may decide to push your accelerator to its limits. This can create vibrations that open the fridge door.
Keep things calm and the fridge shouldn’t open. Especially when you are driving on twisty mountain roads, you have to keep things calm as the items in your fridge can roll around if they are not stacked properly.
Newer RV owners often want to see what their vehicle can do. Once you are on a trip, you should focus on the passengers and items in it. This is not a racecar!
The fridges in an RV are often quite small and they are not designed to handle a lot of movement. For this reason, it is important that you handle them with care. These fridges can last up to 10 years.
Make sure that the fridge is closed properly before you start driving. Sometimes people don’t push the door hard enough and it is not completely closed.
In this article, we have outlined some things that you can do to keep the door of your fridge closed while you are driving around with your RV. In most instances loading the fridge properly will do. In some cases, you can also add a lock to make sure that the fridge doesn’t open while you are driving around.
Most of these tips are quite easy to apply. Your fridge shouldn’t open if you follow them! If the door keeps opening up, you can consider getting it repaired as there might be a part that is broken. Getting this repaired can be quite expensive though so make sure that you have followed the outlined steps before you go to the repair shop.
